Every Fire Company has a Story.  This is ours.

Originally founded on December 3, 1918, as Oak Shades Fire Company, District 1 Fire has been serving the community of Aberdeen for over 100 years.  It would then be renamed as Matawan Township Hose & Chemical Company No. 1 until 1977, when

Like any new organization, building the Fire Company required significant time and dedication from our founding members.  The Company constantly held fundraisers, from dances to raffles, in an effort to raise money to operate and purchase the equipment needed to protect Aberdeen.  After purchasing its first Fire Engine in April of 1923, the Company would take part in its first structure fire that June, in efforts to neutralize a structure fire in what was then a local tile company.

Four years later in the summer of 1927, Cliffwood Fire Company was founded, and became the sister company of Aberdeen District 1.  Since then, Cliffwood Fire and Aberdeen Fire have worked together on countless emergency calls, providing mutual aid and support to each other across the District.

Soon after, “Oak Shades Fire Company” was renamed Matawan Township Hose & Chemical Company No. 1.  We would operate under this name until 1977, when the people of Matawan Township voted to rename the town to its current name, Aberdeen Township.  As a result, our Fire Company made the change as well, and now operates under our current name, Aberdeen Township Hose & Chemical Company No. 1.

As the decades passed and the Company grew, new fire trucks were added to Aberdeen’s fleet.  By 1985, our Fire Company moved out of its old House on Main Street, to our current home at 490 Lloyd Road.  By this time we had gone from one truck, to five trucks in the bay.  Since our inception in 1918, we have had a total of 15 fire trucks, and thousands of firefighters volunteer their time and lives to protect the people and property of Aberdeen Township when called upon.

 

No matter the time of day, no matter the weather, no matter the call, the men of Aberdeen Township Hose & Chemical No. 1 stand ready to answer the call to protect and serve the citizens and lands of Aberdeen Township.
